IUGS Geological Heritage Sites

“An IUGS Geological Heritage Site is a key place with geological elements and/or processe of scientific international relevance, used as a reference, and/or with a substantial contribution to the development of geological sciences through history.”

The main goal of IGCP 731 – IUGS Geological Heritage Sites is the recognition of geological sites from all aroud the World that are iconic and recognized by all geoscience community for their impact in understanding the Earth and its history.

More than 200 specialists from almost 40 nations and 10 international organisations have participated in the definition of standards and the selection of candidates. 190 candidate sites have been received and evaluated by 34 experts from different geological disciplines. The result of this challenging and collaborative process is the list of the First 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites, a long demanded initiative by the geosciences community.
