Basque Coast UNESCO Global Geopark is composed of three municipalities:  Deba, Mutriku and Zumaia

Mutriku

Getting lost in the narrow cobbled streets of Old Quarter of Mutriku, one od the best preserved in Gipuzkoa and designated a Monumental Ensemble, is a feast for the eyes. As we walk through them we will discover beautiful 15th, 16th and 17th palaces and towers. Without realising it, we will find ourselves at the old harbour, one of the oldest in Gipuzkoa. For years its inhabitants were involved in whale hunting and today many of them continue with fishing. The old harbour has been upgraded today with a modern marina. The visit to the Nautilus Geological Visitors’ Centre is a must to get to know the oldest flysch in the Geopark.

Deba

Deba has geological, natural and cultural values, so visiting it is a must. Its magnificient beach is ideal for surfers of all levels. Along its rugged coastline we can enjoy the impressive cliffs formed by the Geopark’s well-known black flysch. The town centre features the parish church of Santa Maria, a jewel of Basque ghotic, and an unavoidable visit for pilgrims and visitors who have never seen it. Among its street we can imagine that the medieval town and its famous whaling port must have been like, we will get to know the importance for the local economy of the stone from its quarries present throughout the Basque geography, and we will also get to know the atmosphere for the “txikiteo” (going from bar to bar) and the local gastronomy.

Zumaia

Delightful coastal town where visitors can wander through its old quarter among palaces and the monumental parish church of San Pedro, or else walk through its wilderness areas like the dunes and beach of Santiago, taking the opportunity to visit de Z Centre for Culture. From the Algorri headland, the chapel of San Telmo or the Beach of Itzurun we can enjoy the amazing landscape offered by the imposing flysch cliffs and the breathtaking sunsets. The visit to the Algorri Visitors’ Centre will enable us to find our about all this natural, geological heritage in depth and in an instructive, enjoyable way.
